The worst week to close is when the rooms are full

Edinburgh is busy all year and busiest in summer, with August and the festival at the peak. Hotel and spa pools, members' clubs and health clubs, leisure and university pools all see heavy use.

Pool work takes the time it takes: drain-down, preparation, tiling or regrouting, curing and a slow refill. What we can do is scope early and have materials ready, so none of the closure is wasted. If your quiet weeks fall in midwinter, tell us early and we will plan around them, including heating the pool hall for curing.

Pools in period properties

A pool in an older building can sit beside historic finishes, with narrow corridors and tight stairwells between it and the street. We look at how materials and waste will move through the building, and how floors and walls along the route will be protected, before agreeing a plan.

If the building is listed or in a conservation area, check with the local planning authority whether any consent is needed for the work. That is the owner's call, and better asked early.

Spa, steam room and changing areas

Spa pools, steam rooms and changing areas often share the main pool's closure. Grouping them together makes the most of the downtime, and we can scope them all on one visit.
