Chelmsford pool tiling, and the scale that builds up on it.

Essex has hard water, and Chelmsford pools show it. Scale builds up along the waterline, on step edges and in grout joints, and over time it can make a sound finish look worn out. We work out what is scale and what is real damage before recommending anything.

Scale

What hard water does to a tiled pool

Limescale is the light, crusty build up that appears where water evaporates or splashes, most of all at the waterline and on steps. It roughens the surface, holds dirt and can hide open joints underneath.

Water balance is the job of your plant staff or water treatment specialist. Our part is the tiles: cleaning the deposits off and repairing anything that turns out to be damaged beneath them.

  • White or grey crust along the waterline
  • Rough, discoloured grout lines that may still be sound
  • Scale on step nosings and handrail fixings
  • Staining in channels and around gratings
Clean first

Why a test clean comes before a regrout

A small test clean on a drained pool tells us a lot. If the grout comes up firm and full once the scale is off, the pool may only need a proper chemical clean. If it comes up soft or missing, regrouting is likely.

Either way, you see the evidence before agreeing the scope.

Around the city

Pools in Chelmsford and mid-Essex

Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and became a city in 2012. It has leisure and school pools, gym and health club pools, an Anglia Ruskin University campus, and hotel and spa pools in the surrounding countryside, along with private pools in villages along the Chelmer valley and beyond.

Spas and steam

Smaller, hotter, quicker to scale

Spa pools and steam rooms run hot, and in hard water that speeds up the build up of scale on seats, steps and grout. Steam rooms also put the grout under constant heat and moisture, so joints there can fail sooner than in the main pool.

We can look at these areas on the same visit as the pool, so one closure covers both where it makes sense.

Pool work in Chelmsford: common questions

All questions
Can scale be removed without damaging the grout?

Usually, with the right cleaning method for the tile and grout. We try a small area first so you can see the result before the whole pool is done.

Will regrouting stop scale coming back?

No. Scale comes from the water, so it will return unless the water balance is managed. A sound, well finished grout is easier to keep clean, though.

Do you clean spa pools and steam rooms in Chelmsford?

Yes. Spa pools and steam rooms scale up quickly in hard water areas, and we can clean, repair and regrout their tiling too.

  • The condition of the tiles, joints and background
  • Access to the pool and the working areas
  • Preparation, cleaning and any repairs needed first
  • The programme and when the pool can close
