Liverpool pool tiling, where the old tiles matter.

We repair, regrout and retile swimming pools in Liverpool for hotels, leisure operators, schools and private owners. A lot of the questions we get here are about older pools: how to keep a finish going, and what to do when the original tile is no longer made.

Older finishes

Pools that have been patched before

Liverpool has a mix of long-established public pools and newer hotel and spa pools. In the older ones it is common to find tiles that are out of production, original grout patched more than once, and repairs from different decades side by side.

The job is usually to keep what is still bonded and deal properly with what is not. Where the render behind is sound, targeted repairs and a regrout can put a tired pool back in good order without stripping it out.

Matching tiles

When the original tile has gone out of production

Sometimes a close match can still be found. Often it cannot. Spare tiles salvaged from a less visible area, such as under a step or behind a ladder, can go where they will be seen most, with a near match used elsewhere.

A perfect match is not always possible, and we would rather say that before we start. On some pools a deliberate contrast band, or replacing one whole area, looks better than a scatter of near misses.

  • Look for spare tiles held on site
  • Compare colour, size, thickness and edge profile
  • Salvage from less visible areas where it makes sense
  • Set out repairs so any difference looks intended

What helps us most

Note where tiles have been replaced before and roughly when the pool was last regrouted. Failures that keep returning to the same spot usually point to something behind the tile, such as movement or a weak background.

Keep any spare tiles together and labelled. On an older pool they can decide whether a repair blends in or stands out.

Pool work in Liverpool: common questions

All questions
Can you repair an older pool without retiling it all?

Often, if the render behind the tiles is sound. We inspect and tap test, then let what we find under the lifted tiles decide how far the repair goes. If a retile is the better option we will explain why.

Can you find tiles to match our existing pool?

We will try. A close match is sometimes available, and salvaged spares help in the most visible spots. Where nothing matches we will talk through options such as a planned contrast band.

Do you include changing rooms and poolside areas?

Yes. Changing rooms, wet rooms and pool surrounds can be scoped alongside the pool and done in the same closure.

Start with an estimate

Tell us about your pool.

Send a few details and we’ll get back to you to understand the job. Photos of the tiles, grout and problem areas help us a lot, and you can add them below.

We aim to reply within two working days.

What affects the estimate?

  • The pool area and which surfaces need work
  • Joint size and the grout or tiles involved
  • The condition of the tiles, joints and background
  • Access to the pool and the working areas
  • Preparation, cleaning and any repairs needed first
  • The programme and when the pool can close
